NOTICE.
Whenever, in the exercise of his best judgment, the compiler has considered a coin to be false, or of dubious authenticity, it will be found so described throughout this Catalogue; but, as a difference of opinion may, and probably will, arise with respect to others, it has been deemed desirable to respectfully notify, that all purchases are expected to be made upon the individual judgment of the purchaser.
INDEX.
The arrangement of this extensive Collection of Greek Coins being strictly in accordance with the mixed Geographical, Alphabetical and Chronological system so admirably laid down by the learned Eckhel — a system now so well understood by the Greek Numismatist, and there¬ fore universally adopted — it has not been thought necessary to extend this Index beyond an Alphabetical reference to the various provinces, as in all cases, such reference being made, the Coins of the Cities and Kings will at once present themselves respectively in their proper Alphabetical or Chronological Order.

a quadriga at full speed to right, and the letters IX, Torremuzza, pi. 1,
fid- 1 yfine work and in almost perfect condition, though slightly rubbed
on the reverse size 51, wt. 104 grs. 1
*** In allusion to this very valuable medal Torremuzza says, “ Maxima; raritatis est,” and Mion net estimates it at 300 francs. Sestini, in the second edition of his Classes Generates, p. 18, erroneously renders the legend 2IKEAIOTAN., though he had already given it correctly in the first edition of that work at p. 10.
331 Abacaenum, bearded Head of Jupiter, the hair bound with a garland of olive leaves, to right, rev. ABAKAIN. 232 Abacaenum, ABAK., same head of Jupiter as on the first coin of the last
lot, rev. AINI., type as before, but without the acorn, a variety of Torr. ii., 4, as it came from the die , size 2, ivt. 11 grs. — Another, as the second coin iu the last, but with the Scropha to left, a variety not figured by Torremuzza ; in good condition size If, wt. 11-3E grs. 2
233 iEtna, quae et Inessa, bald bearded Head of Silenus to right, rev. AITN.,

234 Agrigentum, AKPArA[NTIN]ON„ the Monster Scylla to left ; over the
head of it is a crab ; rev. AKPAT. around two eagles trampling upon a dead hare to right, Torremuzza, v, 1 size 9 by 7, wt. 2671 grs. 1
*#* This excessively rare and beautiful medal is so very slightly rubbed, that it may be said to be in perfect condition, it is very accurately engraved, but on an enlarged scale, in Noehden’s selections from this cabinet, part I, plate 3.
235 Agrigentum, AKPATANTINON., an Eagle feeding upon a dead hare to
left, under the hare is a small escallop shell, rev. a Eish, with the mouth wide open, to left ; above, is a crab, and to the left, a small escallop shell, as Torr. Auct. I, pi. i, fig. 2, but without the murex, in perfect condition, and of a high degree of rarity
size 7, wt. 269f grs. 1
236 Agrigentum, same types and adjuncts ; the obverse of this medal is good,
but the reverse has been scraped, and is in very poor condition
size 7f, wt. 200^ grs . 1

237 Agrigentum, AKPACANT02. (boustrophedon), an Eagle, with the wings
closed, to left, rev. a Crab, on a slightly concave field, as Torr. Aact. I,
pi. i ,fig. 4, extremely fine size 7, tot. 265 % grs. 1
*** At the first glance this tetradrachm presents nothing remarkable beyond its fine condition ; but on an attentive examination it will be seen that, in addition to the antennas, there are four lines or linear processes issuing from, or immediately upon the head of the crab; these were thought by Torremuzza to be Punic letters, but their resemblance to those he names are _ purely imaginary, as will be seen by comparing this beautiful and perfect coin with his figure;’ his conjectures in reference to these supposed letters, of course fall to the ground, audit is therefore necessary to seek another explanation of tins remarkable deviation from the normal type ol the money of Agrigentum.
238 Another, same types, but the crab presenting only the usual eyes and
antennse, without the deviation just referred to, very fine
size 6!, wt. 269! 1
*** On this fine specimen it will be seen that the carapax of the crab is spotted, and the various joints and tarsi of the legs are most accurately depicted.
239 Another, same types, but the eagle appears to be perched upon the
capital of a column, and under the crab is a kind of scroll, similar to Torr. v, 5, very fine size 6^, wt. 265! yrs. 1
240 Another, with a flying Victory under the crab, as Torr. Auct. I, pi. 1,
fig. 3, in very fair condition size 6, wt. 259 \ grs. 1
241 Another, without any symbol under the crab, a didrachm of old rough
work, but good condition, size 6, wt. 134 grs. — Another, of a more recent period, and reading AKPACA2., very good condition, size 4!, wt. 136| grs • 2
242 Another, reading AKPA., and of fine work and condition, size 4,
wt. 136! grs- — Another, also reading AKPA., but retrograde, and a small human head under the crab, very fine, size!, ivt 138 grs. 2
243 Agrigentum, Head of Jupiter, rev. an Eagle, two varieties, sizes 4! and

244 Alsesa, AAAI., Bacchus walking to left, and holding a diota and a bunch
of grapes, rev. 20TER. (retrograde), Jupiter-HUtophorus seated to
left, and in perfect condition size 1!, wt. 10 grs. 1
* A This obolus was known to Sestini, who assigned it to Galaria, but it certainly appears rather to belong to Alaesa, of which city there are no silver coins on record, that given to it by Mionnet (Sicile 82) belongs to Alifm.
245 Atabyrium ? a Horse to right, rev. AT. in monogram, within a wreath,
{Mionnet, Incertaines YI, 640-185, 50 francs) size 1!, wt. 8! grs. 1

247 Camarina, KAMAPINAION. before the Head of Hercules, in advanced
manhood, to left, rev. a Quadriga at full speed, to left, driven by a helmeted female, who holds the reins with both hands, the usual Victory over the horses, and on the exergue a swan in the act of swimming, cf. Torr. xvn., 122, rare and in a very satisfactory condition
size 8, wt. 264 grs. 1
*** For a magnified figure of this tetradrachm, winch is from the Torremuzza Col¬ lection, see Noeliden’s Selections from this cabinet, plate 6.
248 Another, types similar, but without the swan on the reverse, very good
condition size 6^, wt. 211 grs. 1
*** The weight proves tins coin to he an ancient forgery, being of copper, thickly plated with silver.
249 Another from quite a different die, with the shin of the lion’s paws
knotted round the neck of Hercules, who is beardless, rev. a Quadriga and Victory to the right, and on the exergue two Hydrise or diotte, Torr. xvii., 5, in very good condition size wt. 265 grs. 1
250 Another specimen, apparently from the same die, and in equally good
condition size wt. 257Tb- grs. 1
251 Another, youthful Head of Hercules to left, covered with the lion’s
skin, so as to appear enclosed in the lion’s jaw, before, a bow, rev. a
Quadriga at full speed to right, guided by a helmeted female (probably
the genius of the city), who holds the reins in the left hand, and the
rod or goad in the right, above, a Victory floating in the air in the
opposite direction to that of the horses and holding out a wreath, on
the exergue are two hydrise or amphorae, as on the preceding, and the
inscription KAMA PIN A, cf. Torr. xvii., 7, in very fine condition, and
ofi beautiful icorlc size 7, lot. 263 grs. 1
*** A magnified figure of this choice and valuable tetradrachm is given in Noehden’s Selections, part I, plate 5. Torremuzza conjectures that the two hydrise, which so frequently occur on the coins of Camarina, may he symbolical of its local position upon the rivers Idipparis and Oanus. M. Noehden, however, thinks they may refer to the festive banquets with which the victories at the Olympic games were celebrated.
252 Camarina, youthful full-face horned bust of the Genius of the River
Hipparis, between two fishes, and surrounded by an undulating border to indicate the waters of that river, rev. KAM[API]NA., Leda sailing on a swan, her veil inflated by the wind, and followed by a dol¬ phin ; the feet of the swan concealed in an undulating margin, possibly intended to indicate the waters of the Lake Camarina, Torr. xvm, 3, in a very satisfactory state , though rubbed on both sides
size 5 wt. 144| grs. 1
*** This beautiful composition, considerably magnified, forms the subject of part I, plate 4, of Noehden’s Selections from the Northwick Collection. Torremuzza’s figure is extremely inaccui-ate, and conveys hut a very imperfect idea of the actual beauty of the coin ; his description of the reverse is as follows, “ Ab alia vero parte Leda est a Jove sub forma Cycni, cui insidet, rapta, manu nimbum supra caput expansum tenens.”
SICILIA. — SILVER.

253 Camarina, inilAPlS. (retrograde), horned head of the Ilipparis, but in profile to left; on either side is a fish; rev. KAMAPINA[IO]N., Leda on a swan, as the last, but in the field two fishes, and without the undulations, Torr. xvm, 1, extremely rare , and in yoocl condition, though rubbed on both sides size 6, wt. 123 grs. 1
25! Camarina, full-faced horned head of the Hipparis, between two fishes, rev. Victory carrying a caduceus, size 3-|, very rare, but poor ; Victory flying over a swan, all in a wreath, rev. KAMAPINAION., full-length figure of Minerva to left, four varieties, size 2 5

256 Another, a variety of the last, without the parsley-leaf, in very good
condition size 7, wt. 2601 grs. 1
257 Another, but reading KATANAION., and without the Victory, an ex¬
cellent specimen, nearly fine size 7, wt.2QQgrs. 1

to left ; behind is the cammarus, or prawn, and before it, a branch of the wild pomegranate (balaustium) in bloom ; rev. a chariot with four horses, running at full speed, but at the close of their career, as indi¬ cated by the column, or stele, which the wheels of the car have not yet passed ; above is a floating Victory, with the right hand about to crown the charioteer with a wreath, and holding in the left a tablet, on which is inscribed the name of the artist, EYAIN ; on the exergue is a crab, Torr. xx, 4, very fine condition, and of excessive rarity
size 61, wt. 267 grs. 1
%* This tetradrachm, from the Cabinet of Prince Torremuzza, is unquestionably one of the most interesting in this magnificent collection, it is engraved in Noeliden’s Selection, plate 9. It may be permitted to be observed here that Torremuzza misread the letters on the tablet ETAO, which, he thought, was the word ETAOriA in abbreviation, “ quo Grajci laudes, vel encomium quse victoribus dabantur designabat.”
259 Catana, laurelled androgynous Head of Apollo, represented full face
and in unusually bold relief ; to the right, the name of the artist, HPAKAEIAA2-, rev. a Quadriga and Victory to left, the horses grouped similarly to the last, on the exergue KATANAK2[N]., cfi. Torr. xx, 1, in fine condition, and of extreme rarity size 7, wt. 260 grs. 1
260 Another, a variety, with the name of the artist very distinct, on the
reverse, the Victory stands on the reins which are held with both hands by the Aurigarius, and under the legend is a fish, a beautiful specimen
though slightly rubbed size 7, wt. 2641 grs. 1
*** This is one of the fine specimens selected from this cabinet by Noehden who has faithfully represented it on his tenth plate. By Combe, the artist’s name was misread HPAKAEIAN, an error which is pointed out in the note appended to lot 263 of the Sale Catalogue of the Thomas Collection.

%* This coin is not in Torremuzza; the nearest approach to it is figured at plate xxi, 16, but that has a female head. It is engraved in Noehden’s Selections plate xn, where the first letter is assumed to be an A, which it certainly is not, but whether the second letter is an E is not so certain; hut as there is no appearance of there having been any more than four letters, it is quite possible the legend may be allusive to the city of Leontini.

*** Engraved in Noebden’s Selections, plate vii. Torremuzza’s figure must have been drawn from a very imperfect specimen, for the antlers of the stag are represented, and, in bis work, described as the branches of a tree — “ Canis est super arboris truncum deambulans,” &c.
324 Segesta, female Head, rev. a Dog before three ears of corn, and two

size 11, wt. 668 grs. 1
* * It is to be regretted that the surface of this surprising production, like many- other valuable specimens in this extensive collection, should have been covered with a coating of varnish ; and furthermore that the eye of the female head should be defective, a blemish apparently arising from a fracture in the die ; with these exceptions, however, it is in the finest possible condition, and viewed as an effort of medallic art, it is difficult to conceive anything more classically beautiful and life-like than is presented by the composition on the reverse of this numismatic gem ; it is not engraved in Noehden, though referred to in the description of the following.
334 Another, but of a different style of work, although by the same
artist ; the reverse, in every particular, is the same as the last ; on the obverse is the letter K only on the diadem, but the artist’s name, KIMQN. is inscribed at full length on the dolphin under the head, Torr. lxxii, 1 size 10, lot. 668 grs. 1
This magnificent specimen of Greek art is from the splendid collection of Prince Torremuzza, and is beautifully engraved in Noehden’s Selections, plate xm.

of Arethusa, which is neither diademed nor in a net, is a small scallop
shell, Tovr. Azuct. II, tab. VI, fig. 2 size 10, wt. 665-— grs. 1
*** The obverse of this valuable medallion is engraved in Noehden’s Selections from this Cabinet, where it precedes the eleventh plate in the third part ; it is in remarkably fine condition, and although of a different style of work to either
of the two preceding, may, in some respects be advantageouslv compared with them.
o36 Another, precisely similar to the last, but without the shell, in beautiful condition , but less spread than the three preceding

340 Another, obv. SYR A 902I0N., direct and around the head to right, and
on the reverse the V ictory is walking or dancing upon the reins of the horses, which are passing to the right ; differs from any in Torremuzza , but for the reverse compare lxxvi, 15, beautiful work , fine condition , and extremely rare size 7, wt. 266 grs. 1
*** -The letter 9 > loco K, indicates that these tetradrachms are of the earliest period.
341 Another, the reverse apparently from the same die as the last, but the
obverse is quite different, having the head to left, and reading SYRA- KOSION., not in Torremuzza , old ivorlc and style, and in very good condition size 61, wt. 264 grs. 1
342 Another, obv. old style of head, rev. Biga and Victory to right. _
Another, with the biga to left, unlike any in Torremuzza , but for style of head-dress, cfi Torr. lxxiv, 6, both good tetradrachms 2
343 Others, as the first in the last lot, but varied on the obverse. — Another,
as Torr. lxxv, 3, but with a serpent on the exergue, both good tetra¬ drachms, and the reverse of the last very fine 2
344 Another, similar in general arrangement and the symbols to Torr.
lxxvii, 8, but a large coin, and the hair differently arranged. — Another, with the hair short, and without any ornament whatever, and on the exergue of the reverse, a snake, not in Torremuzza , botli Tetra¬ drachms of the biga type, and in very fair condition 2

345 Syracuse, as Torremuzza, lxxvi, 1 ; lxxvi, 5 ; Auct. II, tab. vn, fig. 5 ;
and another, with the head-dress as lxxvi, 11, all Tetradrachms of the biga type, and in very fair condition 4
346 Another, with the head diademed, and bound in a knot behind, unlike
any in Torremuzza , and almost fine size 6, wt. 270 j grs. 1
347 Another, as the fourth described in lot 345, but finer
size 6, wt. 270 \grs. 1
* * The weight of this and the preceding is remarkable. The heaviest of the tetra¬ drachms in the Thomas Collection weighed 270 3-10 gr., see the note in the catalogue appended to lot 608.
348 Syracuse, of the triga type and peculiar head-dress, as Torr. Auct. II,
tab. vii, fig. 2, fine condition size 7, wt. 260b grs. 1
349 Another, as the last, and almost as fine size 7, wt.2Q>Qgrs. 1
350 Another, type of the triga, with a lion on the exergue ; the head on the
obverse laurelled and within a circle, and the legend retrograde, Torr. Auct. II. tab. vn, fig. 3, who cites the Carelli Cabinet for this very rare variety, very good condition size 7, wt. 263 grs. 1
351 Syracusse, SYPAKO^ION. around the Head of Minerva, with crested
helmet, represented nearly full face, but slightly inclined to left, and surrounded by four dolphins ; on the left of the front of the helmet are the letters EY., and on the right AEIAA., which, although the K is not visible, is evidently the name of the artist EYKAETAA., rev. a Quadriga and Victory, the charioteer holding up a whip, and the horses grouped as on the Medallions of this city, on the exergue, is an ear of corn, compare Torr. lxxiv., 8, but that has a dolphin on the exergue and no letters on the helmet, in most beautiful condition , and unquestionably the rarest type in the Sicilian series size 7-|, wt. 262 grs. 1
*** Noehden has figured tins splendid medal, plate xv. ; but in bis description he has overlooked the final letter on the helmet, and therefore concludes that the name of the artist was Euclides ; as a proof of its high rarity and money value, the Thomas specimen which, as was fairly stated in a note appended to the lot 593, was in a very poor condition, and had lost considei’ably in weight by having been in circulation, nevertheless brought £29.
352 Syracusse, usual Head of Arethusa to left, dolphins, &c., above, 2YPA-
K02I02. (sic), and before the head a pair of tablets, on which is
inscribed at length, the name of the same artist, as on the last coin,
EYKA., EIAA., rev. the usual Quadriga and Victory type, and on the
exergue, EYMHiS OY., as Torr. lxxii., 11, whose figure however gives
only the tablets without the letters, in fine condition, and of extreme
rarity size 6|, wt 266 grs. 1
The letters on the tablets, which escaped the notice of Torremuzza, are very clearly defined on this fine specimen; as a joint production of the two eminent Syracusan Artists Eucleida and Eumeneus, this beautiful tctradrachm is of the highest value and interest.

3o3 Diademed Head of Arethusa, full face and between two dolphins, witli ear-rings and necklet of pearls, and the name of the artist KIMDN. inscribed in very small letters on the front of the diadem, all within a circle of pellets, beyond which, and immediately over the head, [APE®] Oi,A., rev. a Quadriga, the horses in high action, and most tastefully grouped, with the Victory standing on the heads respectively of the left yoke and the left trace horse; to right, in the field, in extremely minute letters, SYPAK02I0N., and on the exergue, an ear of corn, Torr. auct. n., tab. vi., fig. 3, of exquisitely beautiful wor~k, in 'perfect condition , and rare to excess size 74, wt. 269 grs. 1
*** This gem must be seen to be appreciated.
354 Another, same types and symbols as the last, but without the artist’s
name, the obverse of this rare specimen, though somewhat rubbed, is in good condition, but the reverse, unfortunately, is partially coated with black oxide size 7, wt. 256 grs. 1
355 Syracuse, 3YPAK02I0N.- behind a female Head, possibly intended for
Diana, in profile to left, with the usual number of dolphins, &c., and on the diadem the name of the artist, EYMHN 0 Y., in two lines, rev. Quadriga and Victory to left, Torr. lxxii., 7, in excellent condition , and of extreme rarity size 9, wt. 268t6q- grs. 1
356 Another, of similar style of work, but the name of the artist, which is
also on the diadem, is and on the exergue of the reverse are
two small dolphins, in very excellent condition
size 9^ by 7%, lot. 264-1 grSt i
*** This tetradrachm is engraved in Noebden’s Selections, plate xiv; but in describing it be says “ on the diadem there are the letters 2U, probably meaning SnSIUN,” whereas all the letters are, as above stated, perfectly distinct.
357 Another, same style of work, but the hair differently arranged, and
without the artist’s name, a variety of Torr., auct. n., tab. yi., fig. 7, in very excellent condition, almost fine size 9 by 7, tot. 266 grs. 1
358 Syracuste, Plead to left, dolphins, &c., beneath, the name of the artist,
nAP[fiI]2. P rev. Quadriga, &c. to left, Torr., auct. n., tab. yi., fig. 5, much rubbed though in fair condition size 7, wt. 265 grs. 1
359 Another, usual Quadriga type, but under the head, the name of the artist,
EYMPINOY., Torr. lxxii., 7, in good condition size 6, lot. 266 grs. 1
360 Another, with EYMHNOY. under the head, and on the reverse the
Victory over the horses holds an oblong tablet, the letters on which
are obliterated, Torr., act. i., tab. vn., 4, rubbed, but in fair condition
for so rare a variety size 7, wt. 261yrf grs. 1
*#* In Torremuzza’s figure, the tablet held by the Victory is inscribed EYAINETO in two lines, a name so often found upon so many of the finest decadrachms; the reverse of this coin bears the appearance of having been purposely defaced.

361 Syracusse, usual Quadriga type, but under the head EYM., and on the
reverse the charioteer is winged ; on the exergue, a marine Monster, and the letters EYO., Torr. lxxii., 10, in very good condition
size 6^-, wt. 267-pg- grs. 1 Engraved by Noehden, plate xix.

size 7, lot. 262 grs. 1
363 Another, with EY. behind the head, the charioteer not winged, the
letters EY. under the horses, and a dolphin and a fish on the exergue, Torr. lxxii., 11, good condition size 7, wt. 2 66| grs. 1
364 Another, a variety of the last, the reverse imperfectly struck ; Another,
with a different head-dress, and imperfectly struck on the obverse 2
365 Another, the hair elegantly arranged, and an ear of corn on the exergue
of the reverse, Torr. lxxiii., 8, very good condition
size 7§-, wt. 264 grs. 1
366 Another, very similar to the last, but the charioteer holds a torch
size 7i, wt. 260 grs. 1
367 Another, the Diadem unusually broad, and the hair scattered and flow¬
ing upwards, Torr. lxxiii, 12, a very fine specimen
size 6, wt. 265 \ grs. 1
368 Another, as the last, not quite so fine ; Another, with the hair tied in a
knot on the top of the head, as Torr. Auct. i, tab. vii, fig. 3, both in very good condition , and desirable 2
369 Another, of a recent period, with a triquetrum over the quadriga, and
the legend on the exergue, Torr. lxxiii, 16, very good work, and very fine, particularly on the reverse size 6, wt. 266 | grs. 1

quadriga to left, a star over the horses, and the name of the city on the
exergue, a variety of Torr. lxxiv, 3, extremely rare, and as it came
from the die size 6, wt. 195 grs. 1
