RICHARD BOONE HEADS BIG CAST IN “A THUNDER OF DRUMS,” ROUSING DRAMA OF U.S. CAVALRY, IN CINEMASCOPE AND COLOR

In “A Thunder of Drums” Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer presents a rousing out- door adventure-drama in CinemaScope and color depicting the exciting era of the U.S. Cavalry-Indian wars of the 1870's.

It was written by James Warner Bellah, noted historian-writer whose scenarios have given the screen some of its most memorable Western action stories, among them “Fort Apache,” “Rio Grande,” “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Sergeant Rutledge.”

The picture’s cast includes both Hollywood veterans and some of its most popular younger players.

Richard Boone, star of television’s “Have Gun, Will Travel” and “Medic” series, plays his first starring role in a major film as Captain Maddocks, battle-scarred commander of the under- manned garrison stationed at Fort Canby to protect early settlers from attacks by Apache and Comanche In- dians.

George Hamilton and Luana Patten,

who scored as a romantic team in “Home From the Hill,’ represent the love interest in “A Thunder of Drums,” with Hamilton portraying Lt. McQuade, a West Pointer newly as- signed to Fort Canby whose lack of experience brings him into conflict with his commanding officer; and Miss Pat- ten cast as Tracey Hamilton, his for- mer fiancee who has come to the post to marry another officer because she believes McQuade had deserted her.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Arthur O’Connell, recently seen in “Cimarron,” has a meaty role as the veteran Indian fighter Sgt. Rodermill, and other important parts are filled by Charles Bronson, Richard Chamber- lain, James Douglas, Tammy Mari- hugh, the little girl who was trapped on a sinking ocean liner in “The Last Voyage,’ and Carole Wells, of TV’s “National Velvet” series.

The picture introduces the popular recording star, Duane Eddy, making his film acting debut as a guitar-strumming

trooper who sings “Water From a Bad Well” and “Ballad of Camden Yates.”

The story presents its action-filled events from the very opening sequence, a terrorizing scene in which a little girl witnesses the murder of her mother and sister by raiding Indians, and builds up to a hair-raising climax in which a patrol, led by McQuade, is deployed away ftom the main body of Maddock’s troop as a decoy for the Indian ma- rauders. When the Apaches attack, the lone patrol makes its heroic stand against greatly outnumbered forces in one of the most exciting battles ever recorded on film.

“A Thunder of Drums” was photo- graphed largely on locations in the colorful desert-mountain area near Tucson, Arizona, with other scenes filmed in a block-long authentic replica

of the original historic Fort Canby, constructed at the MGM studios.

The adventure-drama was produced by Robert J. Enders, producer of the “Best of the Post’ videoseries, and was directed by Joseph Newman.

BRIEF SUMMARY

One of the most colorful and ex- citing periods of the West, when the U.S. cavalry was the only protection against murderous Apache and Coman- che Indians, is depicted in Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer’s outdoor adventure- drama, “A Thunder of Drums.”

Famed Western historian and writer James Warner Bellah wrote this action- filled drama of events taking place at a remote cavalry post in Arizona of the 1870’s, with the picture given authen- ticity in location scenes filmed in Cine- maScope and color in the desert-moun- tain area near Tucson.

Richard Boone, cast as the rugged commander of the garrison stationed at Fort Canby, plays his first major film role following his success on televi- sion’s “Have Gun, Will Travel” and “Medic” series.

An unusual love story threaded through the narrative involves George Hamilton, as a West Pointer newly arrived at the fort, and Luana Patten as an Eastern society girl. This team first scored together as the young lovers of “Home From the Hill.”

Others in prominent roles include Arthur O’Connell, Charles Bronson, Richard Chamberlain, James Douglas, little Tammy Marihugh and Carole Wells. Making his film acting debut is popular recording star, Duane Eddy, who sings two Western songs com- posed by himself.

“A Thunder of Drums” is a Robert J. Enders Production, directed by Jo- seph Newman. The picture’s climactic episode depicts the desperate battle be- tween Apaches and an outnumbered cavalry patrol in one of the most real- istic and suspenseful Indian vs. soldier fights ever staged for a film.

IT TOOK RICHARD BOONE TEN YEARS 10 MAKE GRADE FROM “HEAVY” TO “HERO”

It took Richard Boone ten years to make the grade from “heavy” to “hero.”

“A Thunder of Drums,’ Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer’s rousing outdoor dra- ma, marks Boone’s first heroic starring characterization on the screen after some 22 supporting roles in which he invariably found himself cast as the villain, beaten, shot or hanged at the fade-out.

In the exciting cavalry yarn from the pen of James Warner Bellah, the actor stars with George Hamilton, Luana Patten and recording star Duane Eddy. His role is that of a hard-as-nails com- mander of a one-troop Arizona outpost caught in the midst of a romantic tri- angle on one side anda band of warring Apaches on the other.

When Boone walked into a Holly- wood producer’s office ten years ago, he had his mind set on becoming a com- bination hero-star. After an appraising look, the producer told him that he’d never get the girl but would probably wind up as one of the most successful character actors in the business.

The snap prediction proved true. Af- ter years of “nasty” roles, among them the “heavy” of all time, Pontius Pilate in “The Robe,” Boone despaired of ever finding a heroic part.

But the big, brawny former college boxer, on whose head perches a shock of rebellious black hair, finally fooled the skeptics. He decided to go the tele- vision route to prove his point—that

George Can’t Win Luana!

Although George Hamilton was rewarded romantically by winning the girl in such pictures as “All the Fine Young Cannibals” and “Where the Boys Are,” one girl has man- aged to elude him for the second time on the screen.

She is Luana Patten, whom George wooed and lost in their first appearance together in “Home From the Hill” and who again leaves him before the final fadeout of their new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film, “A Thunder of Drums.”

However, Luana is quick to point out that she has nothing against young Hamilton, personally.

“Some day we may wind up in a clinch,” she smiles, “but so far the script writers haven’t let us.”

THE ADDITIONAL SCENE AND PLAYER MATS, SHOWN IN THE COMPLETE CAMPAIGN MAT ON ANOTHER PAGE, MAY BE ORDERED SINGLY.

he could swashbuckle with the best of them.

Boone’s virile appeal hit box-office paydirt in 1956 with his introduction to TV viewers as Paladin in the “Have Gun, Will Travel” series. The adrena- lin count shot up in millions of flutter- ing female hearts and transformed him overnight into a heroic image.

But it wasn’t a simple transforma- tion. Even after his initial break from villain parts three years earlier in the highly successful “Medic” series, pro- ducers were reluctant to take a chance on him as Paladin. It was a network official in California who, after inter- viewing Boone, determined to hire him on his own.

“What do you think of Richard Boone?” he wired the East rhetorically.

“Richard Boone is the homeliest ac- tor in Hollywood,” the East replied.

“Congratulations, you have just signed the homeliest actor in Holly- wood,” wired back the network man.

And with this succinct transconti- nental patter, Boone found himself hero to some 40,000,000 video viewers as the gallant Paladin, the black-suited gunslinger whose arched eyebrow and

tight lips have been known to cower a badman at twenty paces!

HISTORIC FORT WAS REBUILT AT STUDIO

A block-long replica of historic Fort Canby, Arizona, was constructed at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios for the new CinemaScope and color cavalry adventure drama, “A Thunder of Drums,” starring Richard Boone, George Hamilton, Luana Patten and Arthur O’Connell.

Nine adobe buildings surrounded by a 12-foot-high pointed log fence were built from the descriptions of screen writer James Warner Bellah, noted his- torian and authority of the 1870 West- ern era.

In addition, filming took place on locations in the colorful desert-moun- tain area near Tucson, where the pic- ture’s spectacular U.S. Cavalry-Indian fights were photographed.

2 DUANE EDDY SONES

Popular recording star Duane Eddy, the country’s top guitar instrumentalist, not only makes his acting debut with Richard Boone, George Hamilton and Luana Patten in Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer’s “A Thunder of Drums,” but also composed two early-West songs which he sings in the film. Keyed to the 1870 era of the colorful U.S. Cav- alry days, the songs are titled, “Water From a Bad Well” and “Ballad of Camden Yates.”

Bantam Books, one of the largest paperbound publishers in the world, has planned an extensive promotion campaign on A THUNDER OF DRUMS. Distribution of the book will be made to dealers throughout the country timed to the

opening playdates.

Over 100,000 paperbound outlets—newsstands, drug stores, variety and chain stores, air, bus and rail terminals, department stores and book shops will display A THUNDER OF DRUMS. Plan a strong local campaign keyed to point- of-sale displays of books, rack cards, streamers, posters and movie tie-in stills. Arrange for window displays in stores selling the book; tie-up with local libraries using stills for counter displays; set up colorful display of paperback edition,

stills and posters in your lobby.

If you require special assistance, write or wire: Mr. Tim Horan

Bantam Books 271 Madison Avenue New York, N. Y.

MUSIC PROMOTIONS

For anon-musical picture, A THUNDER OF DRUMS offers strong opportuni- ties for musical promo- tions. Popular recording star Duane Eddy, an im- portant member of the cast, has recorded the title song, plus three other numbers from the picture —‘‘Water From A Bad Well,” ‘‘Ballad Of A Set- tler’s Daughter,’’ and ‘Fort Canby Dance’’—for the Jamie label, thus opening the field for exploitation.

Duane Eddy

Get local disc jockeys to dedicate a portion of their pro- grams to a ‘Salute To Duane Eddy” during which time they play only his recordings.

Tie-up with local record shops arranging window and counter displays using photos and posters from the picture. Place small credit cards in the many ‘‘juke joints’’ around. If possible, have Duane Eddy recordings placed at the top of the juke box listings.

Western music is popular throughout the country. A local radio station may be interested in programming a ‘‘West- ern Day”’ as inspired by A THUNDER OF DRUMS. During each hour of air time the station would play a ‘‘mystery”’ Western song, inviting listeners to identify the song and the film from which it comes for guest tickets.

An alternate would be a complete program dedicated to Western movie music. Some titles are: ‘‘High Noon,” “Saddle the Wind,’ ‘‘The Hanging Tree,’’ ‘‘Giant,”’ ‘Gunfight at the OK Corral,’’ ‘Buttons and Bows.”

ESSAY CONTEST

The historical theme of A THUNDER OF DRUMS can be used to capture the interest of school chil- dren by means of an essay contest sponsored by your American Legion Post through a local news- paper. Open the contest to all students of Amer- ican History, asking for an essay on this theme: “The Importance of the Settling of the West in the Development of America.’’ Savings Bonds should be awarded to the best three essays with guest tickets to your engagement for the ten runners-up.

TOY PROMOTIONS

An exciting story of the West with the traditional Cavalry-Indian conflicts has a broad appeal to children of all ages. Take advantage of this by tying-in with stores which sell toys representing this period of history. Toy drums, log cabins, sol- diers, Indians and models of forts are all popular. Arrange for window and counter displays featur- ing stills and posters from the pictures. Set up such a display in your lobby in advance of playdate, crediting the store from which the toys were pro- moted.

WESTERN EXHIBITS AND “FREEDOMLANDS”

Does your city have a display devoted to Ameri- cana or the West, as in museums, carnivals and the numerous ‘‘Freedomlands’’?

Where western life is depicted or can be incor- porated into such exhibits, an opportunity is pre- sented for an important display connected with A THUNDER OF DRUMS, utilizing stills and other material from the picture. Wagons and materials from existing local ‘‘Freedomlands”’ or other ex- hibits also might be secured for parades and front- of-theatre displays.

INDIAN HEAD PENNIES

Check with a local coin or antique dealer and get a reasonably rare Indian Head Penny date, one that is worth about 25 cents at present. Through a press release, state that the first 25 persons to bring one of these Indian Head Pennies to your boxoffice will be admitted free to your engage- ment of A THUNDER OF DRUMS, money received to go to your newspaper's favorite charity.

DRUM COMPETITION

Tie-in with a local music store for a drum promo- tion encompassing military academies, armed forces units, veterans’ organizations, bands and fife and drum corps. Invite each organization to enter their drummers in “‘A Thunder of Drums”’ contest to be held on your stage, on a television show or in some suitable public area. Have local band masters judge the contest. Sponsoring music store should present a set of trap drums to the best individual drummer. To the best unit, award a “Thunder of Drums”’ cup suitably inscribed and invite unit to be your guest at opening. Get press coverage from school, service and daily news- papers.

CONESTOGA WAGON

A Conestoga wagon of the type used in the 1870's and drawn through the city streets by a team of horses will make an effective travelling display for A THUNDER OF DRUMS. To complete the stunt, have a man and woman dressed in Western re- galia driving. Banner with picture, theatre and playdate credit.
